International conference
“Specialized Anti-Corruption Agencies:
independent to be effective, effective to lose independence”
Within
the framework of the project “Strengthening prevention of corruption
and minimizing corruption costs to society through monitoring and
supporting independence of the Corruption Prevention and Combating
Bureau (KNAB)” Transparency International – Latvia is organizing an
international conference “Specialized Anti-Corruption Agencies:
independent to be effective, effective to lose independence”.
The
conference is intended as a platform for the leading experts and
officials in the field of anti-corruption. The goal of the conference
is to analyze contextual reasons for creation of specialized
anti-corruption agencies, their most effective institutional set-ups
(subordination) and available safeguards against the attempts to weaken
their independence. Best practices of organizing anti-corruption work
and methodology for monitoring the work of anti- corruption
institutions by the civil society will be discussed as well.
The conference will be take place on 25th-26th of March, 2010; venue “Baltic Beach Hotel”, Jurmala (Latvia).
The
conference will be attended by Latvian and foreign experts and
representatives of anti-corruption agencies, including Mr. Normunds
Vilnītis, Director of the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau of
Latvia (KNAB), Ms. Lolita Čigāne, Chairperson of the Board of
Transparency International – Latvia, Mr. Luis de Sousa, Coordinator of
Anchorage-Net, Mr. Martin Kreutner, President of European partners
against Corruption, Mr. Wolfgang Hetzer, representative of European
Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF), and other acknowledged experts from different
countries.
